Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April in 1972. She was also raised by her maternal grandmother, and was raised as an only child. Scott attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she was accepted into Temple University. She took secondary school classes the course of two years while also working. She hoped to become a high-school English teacher. It was impossible to realize her dream, however, when after studying for three years and becoming a teaching assistant, she left college. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word artist, performing her pieces in live poetry readings. Then she teamed up together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. Through the Roots performance, she declared herself as a musician. She secured subsequent collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to learn about performing arts through the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
